They're Doing across America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for others, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater as well.

The obvious and clear truth that Christ of the gospels requests a form of radical love focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the determined opposition against Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We shall require to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In both situations does it mean feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a mixture that genuine national faithful should be comfortable with.
